01 / About Race

About Race

Original-generation RACE supports eight sequential cylinders with integrated wideband, knock sensing and eight EGT channels through the appropriate second harness. RACE H2O and GEN2 RACE are distinct products; their enclosure and connection specifications must not be substituted for this model.

Up to eight fully sequential cylinders with eight peak-and-hold injector outputs.

Built-in 400 kPa absolute MAP sensor.

8 MB internal logging plus MTune USB setup.

Peak-and-hold injection, onboard wideband and electronic throttle.

04 / Fitment & installation: MaxxECU Race ECU

Fitment & installation: MaxxECU Race ECU

  1. Check the model, hardware revision and connector pins against the device’s wiring diagram.

  2. Check input allocation on RACE main and expansion connectors, distinguishing analogue-voltage, temperature and dedicated sensor channels.

  3. Use the exact ECU wiring diagram; verify every circuit for continuity and shorts before connecting power.

  4. Use the wiring drawing for the exact ECU revision. Calibrate sensors, synchronise base ignition timing and verify injector dead time before loaded tuning.

  5. Use the MTune trigger scope and timing-lock function to verify synchronisation and measured ignition timing before load calibration.

05 / Questions about Race

Questions about Race

Does the main RACE harness provide all eight EGT inputs?

The EGT / E-throttle / additional-I/O harness is a separate connector-2 item. Confirm both harnesses and thermocouple termination when planning those functions.

Is every RACE ECU waterproof?

Standard RACE and H2O have different sealing. Match the installation environment to the actual enclosure, connectors and seals; waterproof ratings are not interchangeable.

Does onboard logging require a connected laptop?

No. RACE GEN1 saves logs independently in its 8 MB memory. Connect a computer afterwards to download and analyse them. Internal logging and USB PC logging are separate modes with independently configured sampling rates.

Is this RACE the same model as GEN2 RACE?

This entry covers RACE GEN1. GEN2 has different memory, processor, connectors and harnesses; choose software and wiring by generation.

Can RACE ignition outputs directly drive any ignition coil?

RACE has eight 5 V logic ignition outputs for compatible igniters or coils with power stages. They cannot carry coil primary current directly.

Are RACE onboard and USB logging rates the same?

No. Internal logging has 8 MB and rates up to 1000 Hz; USB PC logging is 20 Hz. Configure channels and rates in MTune; sensor update speed also limits usable data rate.

What does RACE need for flex-fuel operation?

The software function needs a supported ethanol-content signal and an allocated input, plus suitable fuel, ignition and starting calibrations. The feature listing does not mean an ethanol sensor is built into the ECU or included in every package.

How is RACE ignition synchronisation checked?

MTune provides an ignition timing lock for comparison with a timing light. Match the commanded angle to the measured crank angle and verify trigger configuration before load tuning. A displayed RPM value alone does not prove correct ignition phasing.

Can RACE GPO outputs power pumps and fans directly?

Allocate the output by its documented driver type and current limit. Many GPO channels are low-side control outputs, not a general high-current power supply. Use a suitable relay or power driver when the load exceeds the channel rating, and keep sensor grounds separate from load returns.

Does RACE engine protection work without added sensors?

Protection depends on the measured signal and configured thresholds. For example, oil/fuel-pressure or exhaust-temperature strategies need valid matching inputs, and lean protection needs a valid lambda signal. Configure error handling as well as the limit values.

Does the RACE CAN port work with any dashboard?

No. The ECU supports CAN communication, but the dashboard or module must use a compatible protocol, bit rate and channel configuration. Check the device’s documented MaxxECU profile or configure the supported CAN messages; connector shape alone does not establish compatibility.

Can any Bosch oxygen sensor be fitted to RACE?

No. The internal wideband controller supports Bosch LSU 4.2 / 4.9. Select the correct sensor in software and use its matching pinout. Narrowband and other LSU sensors are not direct replacements.

Do RACE EGT inputs accept an ordinary 0–5 V temperature sensor?

The eight dedicated EGT inputs are for Type-K/N thermocouples through the separate EGT harness. A voltage-output temperature device belongs on an appropriate analogue input with its own calibration; these are different input types.
